One of the issues with which people were concerened is the changing accommodation needs of people from late-middle age onwards.
Empty nesters might downsize if smaller but pleasant properties were available and this would free up family homes for families.
As the ageing process continues so to does the likelihood of poor health and accommodation the maintenence of which imposes less physical demands and eventually varying degrees of supported living.
This document from the Health and Social Care information centre offers some demographic data that can be used to check-out whether any assumptions about this pattern are at least consistent with the facts.
